I did not like beer until I found Guiness. I used to have two requirements before I'd drink a new beer; 1. it must have malt 2. it must pass the flashlite test (if you can see light through it, it's not dark enough). Then I visited the UK (London and Wales), the beer was outstanding. I always thought when folks said it was better, that it was just in their head from "the experience of being there". But it in fact, does taste different (better). While I was trotting around, I tried several beers and found that I gravitated toward the scotch ales and malty beers: Guiness, Murphy's, Kilt Lifter (great name) to name a few. So here's to you Kate and your extraordinary taste! Cheers, Jim So, I too have the same taste buds as Kate (Nov 17th post). I did not like beer until I found Guiness. I have a vague memory of the San Miguel dark striking a good balance between "widely available" and "fairly cheap" at a time -- many years ago -- when dark beers were still considered "exotic" in the US. I'll try to grab one sometime soon and let you know. I haven’t had a San Miguel in years. There's almost no hop taste in Guinness, at least in comparison with other beers. I can't be sure, of course, but I'd bet you don't like (or are not used to) hops. I would seek out a malty beer and see if you like it. Start with a scotch ale, or something like the Westmalle Triple (or really any belgian triple) -- it will be downright sweet. From there work towards hoppier beers and see if you get used to the taste. I have yet to meet anyone in the world who doesn't like the taste of malt. So I think this is a safe strategy. This may be weird, but I've never really liked any beer but Guinness (and yes, only on tap -- bottled or canned Guinness is an abomination, even if you *can* find the cans with the little nitrogen thingies in them). Everything else tastes strange to me. What is it that I'm objecting to, and where do you suggest I start to get myself into drinking more "normal" kinds of beer? I was also a big fan of Sharp Edge for trying new beers, but am not sure if they have the "to go" aspect. I always just ate/drank there. Not so much now. Deli Mine Company? Or has that closed? Like 2 out of 4 brewpubs here. The crazy alcohol laws in the "commonwealth", you have to buy a case at a time at a distributor, or get take out from a bar. Again, I head toward Ohio, where I can get a six pack in a grocery store. Nothing in PIT. Great Lakes in CLE is #31. Other PA Brewers, Victory #14 Downingtown (west of Philly), Stoudts #24 Adamstown (near Reading on I76), Troegs #26 Harrisburg, McKenzie #35 Glen Mills (sw of PHI), and Sly Fox #54 Phoenixville (Valley Forge). http://www.ratebeer.com/Ratings/Beer/RateBeer-Best/2005/RB_RATEBEERBEST062005.htm Clearly, I need to do more drinking in around Philly on the way to AC. I have been to a number of the Great American Beer Festivals in Denver at the end of September. It is what I imagine Valhalla to be, a convention center filled with kegs of beer. (Trying to remember who writes the articles about Pittsburgh.) Ah well--if it's you, get yourself down here and visit DuClaw Brewing Company. A friend of mine for TN took me there to get my first taste of "real" beer, and I've been hooked ever since. (Doesn't hurt that the place doubles as a great resturaunt, too!)
