It struck me as odd at the time, but I understood why it was there because it was a port of an old game and they hadn't got away from the notion of lives at that point (at least they had the sense to be generous with them - they just hadn't realised how generous they could get away with being!) The idea that the same sort of system is there in the new game suprises me greatly! Perhaps they felt it was part of the identity of the original and it had to be kept? I'm not sure I agree with this logic, and you clearly don't! :) Best wishes! I can still hear the music for the original doot doot doot-doot doot... But in the original super mario bros there was the turtle-shell-stair-case-bounce-bounce for near infinite lives. This makes it much more enjoyable to go back and find secret levels, collect coins, etc. And of course in the original Super Mario Bros, there was no save at all! :-) After you finish New Super Mario Bros, you can save at any point. I finished it awhile ago but gave up on getting all the coins. If you're ever low on lives just go to the very first level and run through it grabbing the mega mario for lots of extra lives. Conserve the huts until you need to save. Ending the level on the flagpole with the last two digits the same will cause a hut to spawn(11,22,33 will create one type, 44,55,66 another, and 77,88,99 another).
