I suspect this game occupies that role for most of us who have been wargame fans (wargames are a fairly esoteric niche in the already marginalized world of PC games. For those of you unfamiliar with the genre, I wrote an explanation of the genre last year). There is virtually no turn-based strategy game that comes out that I don’t buy, because I am — perhaps out of some desire to reclaim my youth — trying to return to 1997. I am typically disappointed. When I heard people talking about Commander - Europe at War, I experienced a familiar sense of dread. I was sure I was going to see another Panzer General clone, and I was going to be let down again. They made some of the most well-loved wargames for the Apple ][ and other 8-bit microcomputers. In other words, they’re a company with a history of making grognard games. As such, I have a tendency to want to give them a pass on UI issues. That tendency must be sought out and destroyed: I wouldn’t cut BMW any slack if they started manufacturing a horse-drawn buggy, either. It made my top 5, and has become something I have to avoid playing or I'll lose hours. D3 falls more into the general strategy category than the wargame category because you can choose which units you will build - BoA, like a traditional wargame - uses historical settings and reinforcement rules. (Not that genre rules are hard and fast of course.) D3 is harder for newbies, IMO, but I’ll agree it’s a better game than BoA. (smell like an add, I know). The screenshots are available at AGEOD website. Pocus. If I had to pick the best wargame of the year, I'd probably tap Dominions 3 (am I allowed to pick a fantasy-themed game as a "wargame"?) You noted that D3 is a bit rough for newbies to get into, but I felt that Birth of America was even trickier. Troy,

And there was some heavy competition, too. This was the best wargame of 2006, IMO. And there was some heavy competition, too.
