I tried it and loved it. It’s as smooth and tasty as rum at three times the price.

I haven’t really found anything comparable, although I think Mount Gay is a great rum if you have a lower budget.
]]>It’s not bad, but I like cheaper stuff like the Cruzan single-barrel variety better.
“We make this from sugar cane and not molasses” makes for nice marketing copy, but it turns out that molasses has a lot of, y’know, flavor.
]]>I was not using really pricy rum. This opens up an interesting topic because I’m not sure that I believe in really pricy rum (the way I believe in, say, really pricy brandy or tequila). I specifically used Appleton Estates VX, which I like a bit more than the standard Bacardi array of products, but costs about the same.
I did see a bottle of 10 Cane Rum at the store. 10 Cane is a luxury rum sold for upwards of $30 by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (motto: “If it costs too much for no apparent reason, we make it.”) When I returned from the liquor store that night, I said to my friends “I just made my saving throw against stupidly expensive rum.” If anyone has tried the 10 Cane and has an opinion on whether it’s “worth it” (whatever that means), I’d be intrigued to hear your opinion. Alternatively, if anyone from LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton reads this humble blog, feel free to fly me to Paris to educate me. I am definitely for sale.
