One of the odd things about the Pokemon games is that there is information that would exist in the game world that you must instead get in the real world. I don't know if this is a canny leverage of community, or an overlooked opportunity. The Pokedex is really quite ignorant of the subject it is supposed to be an expert upon! :) Now perhaps this fosters community and is a positive thing, but I do have to wonder... The game is a lot of fun, though I'm more into completing the story/bells and whistles than collecting them all. Mainly because collecting them all is insanely hard, and if you do a good bit of collecting and experimenting, the main game takes a very satisfying and long time for a portable RPG. Actually, I want to collect the ones unique to Diamond, so I can trade 'em to my wife for the Pearl uniques. Will I chase down every legendary? Well, maybe, but it'll happen after Etrian Odyssey's done. Repel potions still exist.

I've had significantly less success with completing even small portions of portable games in recent years, though, and so I have mostly lost touch with the series. If I recall correctly in the early games, there were "repel" potions of varying strengths which could reduce or eliminate the random encounters you experienced. I would be surprised if they removed the option completely. As a young guy, I loved those games. Though I haven't played the newest ones, I suspect that Red/Blue will seem primative and unbalanced to you. It is, however, entirely worth it to experience those games, which I feel to be the raw and primordial form of the RPG, released before the franchises' greater world could influence the games themselves.
