And as for Zen-like repetitiveness building replay value in a game, I think I will always turn to Rougelikes, especially Angband. But I am a strange soul. "You have thirty seconds, go!" I think I first experienced the rhythm effect playing Doom: strafe, boom, strafe, boom... You would almost be firing before the monster was in view. I find that when I'm playing a game best, I actually start tapping my foot in rhythm to the game. Loved the Fifth Element the first time and every time. “You have thirty seconds, go!”

You're spot on about replayability, it's silly when devs put in tiny variables in a game and imagine that it ups the replay value. In terms of hours I've put in, my most-played games have probably been Tekken 3 and Civ II, because of the enjoyable repetitiveness in their gameplay. Also the first episode of Doom, before the levels got complicated. Actually, speaking of an enjoyable rhythm...I think Black is highly underrated. I bought it on a whim when it came out for the PS2 and became absolutely obsessed with it. I love The Fifth Element!
