So a product that no one knows about can make the cut, but once it becomes popular, it sucks. The same thing happens with bands. Those two BG Bioware games were so close to being phenomenal...and yet...and yet...they fell short. They had actual elements of true role-playing and problem solving, but fell short because in between those elements was a boring dungeon slugfest. And then the inevitable save/reload/save/reload final battle was annoying. Still, they were good enough to make me remember them fondly and make me start them again (esp. BG2) periodically. (Icewind Dale was a failure in my mind, just because it was little more than a linear slugfest.) But I haven't seen a really REALLY good adventure game since Grim Fandango. Or maybe Star Trek 25th Anniversary Edition. (And before that, Infocom.) Never played KOTOR, but I played BG, Icewind Dale, and BG2, and I have to almost agree with you about Bioware.
