Now, it's also true that there were other fantastical story lines in previous seasons, but for some reason this one bugged me more, to the point where I really didn't care about it, and that didn't happen before. I know a lot of people think season five was weak for exactly the reasons you mentioned, but it's not like previous seasons had a shortage of weak, venal characters in power. Irving Burrell and Stan Valchek come to mind. I think Simon takes his shots at journalism, but I'm not sure they're entirely without merit--or even excessively unfair. Just my two cents.
