As it is, we don't have a name for these kinds of games. I don't think it was the number of puzzles so much as the degree to which puzzles relied on you finding awkwardly placed, semi-hidden portal points. This was worst in the between-courses sections in the middle of the game that you mentioned, but even the game's proper test courses suffered a lot from this sort of thing.
