I've been playing a lot of internet chess lately. This post is to organize my head and catalog some of the links that I've found useful.
Let's start with a list of decent places to play online (this list will be updated over time, as appropriate...please share additions in the comments if you know of any)
PLAYING ONLINE - WEB
http://chess.com - for correspondence and live chess. Supports classic chess and Chess960, aka Fischer Random Chess. Web apps and iPhone apps. Tactics training, and "chess mentor" a sort of programmed instructor.
http://chessclub.com - Live chess only. Desktop and phone apps.
http://redhotpawn.com - Correspondence chess site with vaguely obscene name.
http://queenalice.com/ - Correspondence chess. Haven't tried this one.
http://gameknot.com/ - what is this i don't even.
Chess With Friends
Chess By Post - for iPhone and iPad, Windows phone and Android versions also available.
Shredder for iPhone and iPad.
tChess Pro for iPhone and iPad
Chessmaster 9000 - Windows and Mac
Chessmaster - The Art of Learning - Windows
(I don't know much about these, so people should make recommendations and stuff in the thread)
Dinosaur Chess - don't laugh, this thing is awesome. For iPad or PC
http://www.eudesign.com/chessops/ - openings
http://www.chessopenings.com - openings
http://chesstempo.com - Tactics training.
http://365chess.com - Tactics training, opening library.
New York Times "Wherever You Are, a Game Is Just a Point and Click Away"
Bobby Fischer Against the World - good documentary on the controversial grandmaster.
