Pittsburgh Gets Apple Store
by peterbIn the "taking away things I like to whine about" department, Apple Computer will apparently be opening a retail store in Pittsburgh. Now I have no excuse for not buying that iPod.
The rumor is that they will be getting planning approval on April 6th, and MacMinute says it will be located at 5508 Walnut Street, in the upscale ("bohemian," say the marketers) Shadyside neighborhood. I can't picture a huge space at that location -- Walnut is a street of fairly modestly sized spaces, so perhaps this is the first of their rumoured new "mini" stores.
I swung by that area on the way home from work tonight -- as near as I can tell, that space is currently occupied by a boutique, which is neither miniscule nor huge. In any event, it's clear that any store opening is months and months away from happening.

And please don't make me wait outside in the rain, OK?
I have walked over to take a look at that space.
It's currently a going-out-of-business art gallery
next to the RiteAid. Larger than most of the spots
along Walnut, but smaller than the RiteAid.
Having an Apple Store one block away from my
apartment would be cool. I can't think of anything
I'd *buy* there, but it'd be cool.
(Yes, I'm a Mac person. My current Mac should be
good for another two years at least. There aren't
any reatil Mac games I want -- that is a general
observation, I don't mean "currently" -- and I must
have missed the iPod drugs.)
(On the other hand, maybe they're *willing* to
wait two years to sell a new Mac to a given
customer.)
I was just there, too, and thinking Walnut Street would be The Right Place for an Apple store. Particularly given the volume of Mac users in the area already - PowerBooks and iBooks galore at Coffee Tree...

If only the parking rates hadn't become so ridiculous - 7 1/2 minutes for 15 minutes makes me limit my shopping - who has that many quarters?
Posted by Vanessa at April 4, 2004 12:38 PMWhy do parking rates matter, Vanessa, when you can just use Pittsburgh's superb public transit system? Hop a trolley, subway, or bus and you're right in the heart of -- OH WAIT, i FORGOT, Pittsburgh doesn't actually HAVE a decent public transit system.

Back to the store, the place is now completely boarded up and workers are inside buzzing away. It's definitely Apple, because the workers won't say what they're working on.
Great location for Apple.

They need to open that beast so I can Mac it up in this hood! Also, that place is within a three minute walk to my apt. so yeah, needless to say I am jonesing for my mac fix.
