Ask the Audience

by peterb

Today I saw the first hour and 40 minutes of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

Instead of sharing my incomplete opinion of the part of the movie I saw, let me ask you: is it worth going back to see the end, or should I just wait for it to come out on DVD? Due to unforeseen circumstances, I left shortly after Anakin formally became Darth Vader.

So how about it? Shell out a few more bucks to see the end, or just wait until I can rent a DVD?

Depends on how you felt about the action sequences and the writing. My feeling was that the action sequences were strangely...sterile, and that the writing was just laughably horrible. There's another scene which is as wretched as the Vaguely Drunken Fall Of Anakin Skywalker, but the rest of it is pretty much just straight death and dismemberment.

If you liked what you saw, its gonna be more of the same. If you didn't like what you saw, it'll also be more of the same.

Well, the last 20 minutes or so are marginally better than the rest of the movie - do with that information what you will.

I'd pay to see the last hour again.

In fact, I've already paid to see the whole thing 3 times already.

I'd go back with you. Kinda curious to see what happens.

Run.

No, really. RUN.

There is one well done scene right at the end that is worth seeing, but I'd wait for the DVD.

Wait for the DVD if you must. The entire last hour felt like a frantic attempt to either attach or cauterize all the loose ends left over after the slacking off Lucas did during the previous 2 episodes.

Lucas really should have left it alone after the first trilogy. The second trilogy was all wood (as in 'wooden acting'), plastic (as in the look of the effects) and marketing tie-ins.

I enjoyed the movie, warts and all. But then again, I also liked Ep 2, for I am forgiving of warts. Even Star Warts. Yes, it's weirdly sterile in places, and Lucas can't write romance, but it also made me cheer, and in one particular place, mist up. Which, frankly, is a first for Lucas movies for me.

I'll probably go see it again in the theaters just, y'know, for the spectacle angle of it all.

By "formally became" do you mean "that cheesy bit where Palpatine is all 'I dub thee Lord Vader'" or do you mean the bit where they put him in the Vader suit?

Because if it's the I-dub-thee bit, there's some marvelous imagery near the end than just wrung my heart (but you have to ignore the remaining dialogue, bleah). If it's the Vader suit, you've already seen like 90% of the interesting imagery.

yes you should, or i'll stop reading ;-)

Laura,

I left right after the "arise, Darth Vader" scene, basically.

I think where I am right now is that I'm willing and interested to see the end, but I don't want to sit through the first hour and a half again.
