Red basses are faster. The lacquer thing could actually be true, for saxes. Wood quality and finish has a lot of impact on stringed instruments, so I've no doubt that the same can carry over. When I played clarinet, it was considered important to have silver vs. silver-plated vs. aluminum keys, even though none of those plays a real part in the resonance. That reminds me:

The green marker that made CDs sound better if you drew on them with it (just on the edges). 2. The magic clock that made everything sound better if you plugged it into the wall. Everything else in High End Audio can be derived from these two devices. The two best crazy audio things I remember are

I have this vague recollecion of magic onyx disks I could put on my stereo to add "depth to the sound", not to mention the laserproof green markers. When I actually saw one, and I saw that it actually had a notch so you could run it around your disk, I had to lie down for a while. This sounds like the last time I moved, and gave away every piece of kitchen equipment I had. I've basically started from square 1 to understand what I actually need vs. what I kept buying. The claim there was that the *color* of the sax's lacquer greatly changes its tone, and you have to be careful it when shopping to get the right sound. Did you know that if your Leica is painted red, you take better pictures? I found the scariest instantiation of this on the Wikipedia saxophone article. I was just thinking tonight on the whole debate that harmonica players can actually have on comb material. Wood versus plastic! A fight to the death!
