The appliance nature of a console appears to have been forgotten by the big players. I wince at the PS3, for instance, which requires some software update every single time I turn it on.... A machine which already lacks a reasonable number (and quality) of games has worse maintenance needs than my desktop PC. This is an amazingly valid commentary on the state of console gaming.

Yeah, all in good time. Not sure exactly when though, as I'm no longer working on it. But last I saw of it, it was looking REALLY good. Sequel? Yeah, all in good time. I've been happy "reading books" and playing old games on an emulator. The nice thing about the books is that they "just work" every time. A clear win for industrial design! Wiis overheat, especially if you have the WiiConnect 24 networking turned on. My Wii broke because of this SEVEN WEEKS after I bought it. I just got my replacement back, but now I'm afraid to use the (admittedly poor) networking. FWIW, Nintendo’s not up to that standard any more. Not enough people have HD sets, and not enough people understand the HD marketplace. The result is that the Wii and the PS2 win partly because everyone knows they will "just work" on their TV, while 360 and the PS3 get software with problems like unreadable text on lower resolution screens. It doesn't help that the hardware runs hot, or loud, or both. And of course, in the case of the 360, it melts. My 360 died some months ago, immediately after Guitar Hero 2 came out (coincidentally, the game fried a friend's system the same week). While the repair/replacement (I'm not sure which they did) process was relatively painless, I shouldn't have had to go through it at all. I have an NES, SNES, and N64 all sitting in a garbage bag in my father's basement. Assuming the bag hasn't leaked, the only one I would even have doubts about working is the original NES because those springs got wonky. Amen.
