Yes it exists but it's subject to all sorts of caveats still; who has what deal with which publisher, even just the fact that getting pages scaned and uploaded into the system takes time, work and people. Plus, the bookstore cafes serve decent drinks and snacks and I can sit there for hours with books I may or may not buy and not be kicked out. Online stores also aren't as conducive to impulse buys, which when I have a fresh paycheck hitting my bank account, has resulted before in me walking out with up to, oh, 8 books. And the draw of browsing the bookshelves is still strong for me. So yes I do buy off of Amazon plenty but the Borders still gets a decent share of my patronage. That and Powell's, but I don't get to Portland very often. The only place I can go for the true bookstore experience anymore is used book stores. You can't even talk about them without referencing TV. That’s how dead books are. You can’t even talk about them without referencing TV.

I went into a B&N looking for Garner's Modern American Usage and discovered that the store carried exactly zero usage guides. If bookstores no longer stock the books needed to write books, they are indeed nearing their final chapter. Love and so forth, Tom P.S. You went with "jumped the shark" when you could have gone with "turned the page"? Seriously? My bookstores-are-dead moment occurred about five years ago.
