Name That Tune!

On October 7, 2008, in Culture, by peterb

I can’t get this song out of my head. I don’t have a copy of the original. I’m pretty sure it was from a commercial for color film from either Fuji or Kodak in the late 1970′s or early 1980′s. But I could be misremembering.

I jotted down the notes and made a brief MP3 fragment of the melody here. Please take a listen, and if you know what this is called, tell me. First person to correctly identify this song wins a beer or a cup of coffee, at their option.

Update: A million thank-yous to reader ErinK for identifying the song; it’s a Vivaldi Largo in D-major.

Originally aired on Sesame Street (also known as “my other mother”), many people remember this video as being about a Sunflower, although it looks more like a variety of daisy to me. Nice view of the Brooklyn Bridge from the window.

don’t you have one of them fancy iphones? get Shazzam and let it tell you the name? maybe?

Tried Shazam. It failed on this one.

  3. I am almost positive I used to play that on piano.

G-Minor Minuet from Handel’s Water Music Concerto Grosso #25

Seriously? I think it’s Vivaldi. The Largo movement of Lute Concerto in D, “RV 93″.

This was in several TV ads over the years, as well as a Sesame Street short that I don’t quite remember (according to comments on YouTube), but I remember it most from the movie A Little Romance.

Erink, you have just won the delicious and refreshing beverage of your choice. I salute you and your detective’s ear. I cannot tell you what a relief it is to finally know what that song is, after so many years.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Apparently, I may have first heard this on Sesame Street. The internet is full of people saying things like this:

“I don’t know if you guys still remember this but…
there is this Sesame Street song which still haunts me to this day and I don’t know the title, but
the clip shows pictures of a sunflower in a pot on an apartment window sill and there is an acoustic classical guitar playing in the background.
and I don’t know the title, arrgh.”

    “I don’t know the episode
But it was like 25 yrs or more ago
The scene was a sunflower on a flower pot
sitting on the ledge of a balcony
    just after the rain.
There is a solo nylon/classical guitar playing on the background”

I am, it seems, a creature of my generation.

Dang. I read the liner notes wrong. The Handel is track 3. I had the right piece of music, but misidentified it. Track 4 is indeed the Vivaldi. Here’s an MP3 of Brian Slawson performing this piece entirely with percussion off his great album, “Bach Beat”.
