Call for Participation: The Sims

On September 7, 2004, in Games, by peterb

I want to like The Sims.

A large number of people whose opinions I respect adore the game. The graphic sensibility in it is bouncy and fun. The sound design and music are top-notch. The game has a sense of whimsy and humor. The ideas are clever, and the amount of customization you can do to your characters and their surroundings is practically unlimited.

And it bores me. It bores me to tears.

I’m preparing an article on why I feel this way about The Sims, but want to enlist some help from others who have played it. I’m particularly interested in those of you who do like the game: why do you like it? What absorbs you? When you play the game, what do you spend your time actually doing? I’m looking for just a couple of paragraphs that summarize these aspects of your experience in The Sims. Submissions from those of you who dislike the game are welcome, as well. Please email your submissions to sims-article@tleaves.com.

  1. Jeff Atwood says:

    Have you seen SIMS 2?

It’s like the SIMS, but with 55% more sex. You think I’m kidding? I wish I was.

    Even more horrifying!
