Security Device Enclosed

On September 6, 2007, in Culture, by psu

What is it with these stickers that come stuck on the boxes of CD, DVD, video game and other media disks? I notice nothing in the damn box. The box is full of nothing but the disk and various flyers and advertisments begging me to buy other shitty movies that happen to be made by the same company that just pissed me off by putting this sticker on the box so I can’t open the god damned item to watch the movie or play the game. Why are retailers such clueless, mean-spirited bastards?

    I blame society.

There’s usually a little sticker with metallic tape placed somewhere on the case (usually on the outside, on the actual wrapper) that has a little device that is deactivated when they wave it over the little de-magnitizer mat thingy at the counter. It’s what sets off those stupid alarms at Best Buy when someone forgets to deactivate them.

Maybe this will make things better: http://raiden-1234.ytmnd.com/

I also blame society. But I’m part of the problem. I like to take the little security doohickeys they stick in books at Barnes and Noble and elsewhere (you know, the ones that mess up the spines of books) and stick them in the give away entertainment papers, or leisure learning guides etc. It’s fantastic when the store crew goes nuts because someone walked out with a “penny saver” or “real estate trends”. At Best Buy I try to stick them onto Best Buy credit card applications. Heelarious.

Tony, though I’ve never met you, I now hate you worse than I hate the stickers.

A Remington razor from Bed Bath & Beyond will set off the alarm at Barnes and Nobles.

Those tags in regular games, cds, or dvds are bad enough. Lately I’ve noticed overzealous stores sticking them in digipaks or expensive, nice packaging I’d like to keep (the Sigur Ros “Takk” booklike cd, for instance). And the glue is so strong that when I try to remove the security tag it winds up destroying the art and the package.

Stickers on things should be outlawed. Not just the tags. It’s bad enough trying to scrape a sticker off a jewel case bit by bit, but then you end up with that gooey crap that won’t come off.

A while ago I ordered an expensive special-edition book – it two months to arrive and when it did it had a gimpy “From the author of” sticker on the front that damaged the cover when I tried to take it off. Less than impressive.

All of the DVDs and CDs I’ve ordered from overseas have nothing more than a simple shrinkwrap sleeve. It’s only on US goods that I’ve had to go through through the interminable process of removing all of the extra super-tape and printed seals.
