Two Quick Browser Games

On April 12, 2007, in Games, by peterb

Here are two games to play in your web browser and destroy your productivity:

Desktop Tower Defense. Action! Guns! Squirt Towers! Recommended by Jeremy Zawodny.

MathsNet Interactive Geometry. Three dimensional puzzles! Tip: Puzzle #1 is the hardest one by a mile. Recommended as retaliation for the earlier link by fpereira.

Go play them! Just don’t blame me when you get fired.

  1. Desktop Tower Defense is unadulterated browser-based crack. Avoid. And if you don’t avoid, dart towers are awesome.

  2. Trin says:

I played the first two that were circling about in links and lost several days of productivity. Now avoid even clicking on links to any game with “tower defense” in its name.

The math puzzle was pretty fun, although I found #10 to be the most annoying.

  3. Andy P says:

Maths puzzle was awesome, though #1 was easy, #9 was the hardest.

My browser didn’t display the “blocks needed” so I thought you just needed to get the shape the first time I played that. I couldn’t see what the big deal was. Then I saw my fiance playing and it displayed right on her browser so I had to go back and do it again. They were fun!

Desktop Tower Defense is evil. I have no idea if I am starting to play well or if I still suck. So I made a tleaves score group so that hopefully others would post their scores.

I typically get about 4500pts on DTD but can’t figure out how to improve on that. Some guy’s topping the leaderboard on about 9000pts and only has about thirty or forty towers in his maze, so god knows how he managed that…

  6. peterb says:

If you choose “send next wave” to send the creeps early, you get a bonus commensurate with how early you have sent them.

  7. Doug says:

You only get that bonus if you win though, right? I’m stuck at just under 3000 myself. I’ve tried huge maze and small maze upgraded a lot, to about the same effect.

  8. Cyberpunk Hero says:

Stuck at about 6000 at DTD myself. I’m pretty sure the key to getting better scores is just to find an early game layout that’ll keep you from getting killed if you summon a bunch of waves a once, then just upgrade tons and tons of squirt towers. Still working on hard mode, though, and that tactic may not work there.

  9. Ben says:

I think you could probably do well by repeatedly building/selling towers that change the optimal route through your maze, so the creeps keep changing direction. That seems like cheating to me, though.

  10. Andy P says:

I think that method is probably the only way to beat some of the bosses, like the Fast Bosses – I usually lose four lives, two to them and two the Flying Bosses. It’s an entirely valid tactic too, but would very quickly get very hectic – “sell, sell, c’mon SELL, bugger too slow, missed it!”

  11. Benoit says:

I build/sell only for the final swarm; the rest of the time, it’s not worth it.

The guiding principle behind my setup is to spread out the two groups, and funnel them past a gaggle of typhoon towers and a blizzard in the center of the map. I start by building the maze with pea-shooters, sell one and upgrade to a squirt, upgrade it all the way to typhoon, and then nothing can get through for a few waves. That gives me time and cash to make a blizzard tower and more typhoons. I think my best score had two freeze towers, one to freeze each flying boss.

Spawns are the toughest, but they move slowly; I tend to hurry up the flying wave so I can shoot them down before the spawn get in range.

  12. Andy P says:

Thanks to inspiration from peterb and Benoit, I now regularly score over 6000 points without losing a single life (therefore don’t need any selling/buying malarky)… but I still can’t get near the 9000 points at the top! Guess I just have to bring the next wave in even more quickly?

  13. Benoit says:

9k points is a bit mysterious. I just played the 10k gold variety and sent everyone — all 50 waves — simultaneously. Result: 8300 (well, it would have been if I’d spent a tiny bit more cash to shoot down *both* flying bosses).

  14. Doug says:

You are right, I got 8364, I wonder if there is a hotkey to send them all at once instead of click-click-click-click… still that might make a 8400 or something but not 9000.

  15. Doug says:

Finally managed to survive hard mode! It took less squirt and more dart. Need the splash damage to everything in the large groups. I tried getting ideas from other peoples mazes but the top scorers all seemed to have insufficient mazes. The first one I looked at had something like 7000 points, and just a single Dart-2 tower in the middle. I guess they must have sold everything off. Then there were the mazes that did not make sense, with short-cuts through the maze. Is that where people sell and build to confuse the bad guys?
