Honestly? I didn’t think this would work. But I tried it anyway, and it is six kinds of awesome.
- 2 cups cream
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- Two heaping tablespoons “green tea slurry” made from cheap green tea powder.
- About a cup of blackberries and blueberries, crushed by hand.
Whip for a bit in a blender before adding it to your ice cream maker (if, like me, you are a cheap bastard and have a cheap ice cream maker).
The odd thing about this recipe is the purple berry juice cancels out the green color of the tea slurry, and you end up with something that is sort of an unearthly glowing ultra-white. It has the bracing bitterness of green tea, mixed with the tartness of the berries. It’s great.
Sounds fabulous.
I had a green tea ice cream last night. On our way to see a show, my girlfriend and I pulled up outside of Scoops (http://www.yelp.com/biz/scoops-los-angeles), which is known for its unusual flavors. Having to double park, I told her to get me “anything made with booze.” She came out with Irish Cream Green Tea, which on the face of it didn’t sound very promising but turned out to be really, really good. (For herself she got Banana Cookies & Cream, for those of you keeping score at home.)
I don’t have an ice cream maker, but I would definitely encourage you to keep experimenting with green tea-based flavors.
I had green tea ice cream for the first time in Japan and it seriously ruled. Green Tea Mixed Berry ice cream sounds like the Food of the Gods! Alas, my lack of ice cream maker renders this recipe less useful to me.
Best wishes!
