For a Monday evening, a few short thoughts on food, because I have not bothered you with this in a while.
Dinner in 20 minutes redux: Ceviche
Buy some of that sushi tuna from the Penn Avenue Fish store. Yes I know it’s not sustainable or whatever. Do it once a year. You need four ounces.
Dice the tuna into small cubes. Put in a bowl. Add olive oil, salt, pepper, juice from 1/2 a lemon and a dash of soy sauce. Further add about a teaspoon or two of chooped cilantro. Stick the bowl in the fridge for 20 minutes. Serve it however you like.
I Do Fusion, Part 3: Kielbasa Fried Rice
This is traditional in the well known Polish communities in Northern China. OK, just kidding. Do fried rice like I wrote it down here a while back, but leave out the ground pork. Instead, substitute 1/2 pound of kielbasa, cut up into small pieces. If you really want to go ghetto, use hot dogs. For a more “authentic” Chinese experience, use the sweet smoked sausage from the Chinese store.
Coffee Heaven
Recently the guys at 21st Street coffee have been doing hand drip coffees. I generally get espresso drinks there, but I decided to try something different the other morning. This is the best non-espresso coffee drink I have had in a commercial coffee house ever. Absolutely sublime. Go get one. Drink it black, because milk would just make it worse.
Avenue B Picoreview
Went to Avenue B in Shadyside. Nothing they do is bad. But nothing they do is actually better than somewhere else where it’s easier to park. This is a petty reason not to go back. But there it is.
The Case of The Disappearing BBQ
There was a guy in the strip the last few week selling brisket and pulled pork sandwiches out of a cart. He was on 21st street and Penn, around the corner from Reyna’s. He has disappeared. If anyone knows where he went, could you tell me please? That was the only good pulled pork I’ve ever had in Pittsburgh.
